Community Building Projects

We aim to support capital building projects where there is strong community involvement, or where the project has regional significance.

This fund is for requests of $50,000 or more for capital works funding towards building projects. If you plan to apply please read through this information and then contact us if you have any further queries.

If you are requesting less than $50,000 for a building project, please go to the relevant funding sector page for your organisation (eg Recreation & Sport, Arts & Culture, etc). Applications will be assessed in line with our strategy for that sector.

Marae and Heritage:  If you are applying for a marae development or heritage building project (regardless of the level of funding), please apply under those sectors.

Two stage submission process:

There is a two stage submission process for the Community Building Projects sector. Please note that generally the Trust will not be the sole funder for a capital building project (the Trust will be one of a few or many funders that contribute towards a capital project) and does not fund retrospectively.

Make contact with us

Please contact our Community Building Projects Grants Advisor, Kimberly Rees, on (09) 360 0291, or 0800 272 878 prior to the submission of an Expression of Interest for your capital project and/or for advice early in your project development.

Stage one

The first stage is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by 1 March using the EOI Form provided, along with a one-page project description which should include a concept drawing, if appropriate.

Stage two

If the EOI is approved, you will be invited to submit more detailed documentation (due 1 September), which is the second stage of the submission process. You will be expected to provide detailed project planning documentation, such as:

  • A feasibility study/needs analysis identifying community need for the project
  • A comprehensive project plan, including: project timeline; building and resource consents; quantity survey report, etc
  • Detailed project costings

Funding decision

Please note that this is a full year submission/application process. If your project is successful as a result of this process, you will be notified of this approval and level of funding in December.

Two funding areas for Community Building Projects:

There are two areas which submissions under Community Building Projects sector will be considered by the Trust.

1)    Collaboration and community engagement

We will consider funding for local community building projects that support strong community involvement, so participation in community activities and social interaction improves.

2)    Regional infrastructure

The Trust will consider funding for capital building projects that are regionally significant and of a public nature that align and support government, industry, and/or the sector’s long term initiatives plans / strategies.

What we don't fund:

  • Loans or debt servicing
  • Top-ups or over expenditures on projects already funded
  • Feasibility studies, needs analysis, project plan development, quantity survey or architectural drawings (as these are supported by other funders)
  • Ongoing operating costs including staffing or routine maintenance (it is expected that applicants will ensure that these costs can be met in another non-contestable and sustainable way)
  • Bars or lounges
  • Carparks and roading outside the land boundary on which the project is situated
  • Accommodation
  • Land or building purchases
  • Projects promoting religious objectives
  • Swimming pools (except for isolated communities where the pool is also the local community pool).
