Cultural Heritage  

We aim to preserve and promote cultural heritage in our region, to ensure our cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

Cultural heritage projects are the conservation, protection and promotion of heritage and are often based around museums, historical societies, marae or other cultural organisations.
We want to assist in promoting professional standards in the sector and want to ensure that organisations we fund are achieving, or are working towards achieving, appropriate professional standards. We encourage groups to become involved with the National Services Te Paerangi New Zealand Museums Standards Scheme Ngā Kaupapa Whaimana a Ngā Whare Taonga o Aotearoa.

Applications will be accepted for the following:

Building Development

Funding will be considered for building development projects including:

• extensions
• redevelopment
• new buildings
• repairs
• fire protection
• environmental controls and security.

Please show us that:

• the need for the project has been clearly identified, either through a satisfactory feasibility study or as part of an operation/business plan
• there is other funding for the project in place
• appropriate advice on the project has been provided by sector professionals
• the project will assist in protecting collections of significance.

The Trust does not fund where:

• The main purpose of the building is a visitor centre.

Collection Care and Management

Funding will be considered for projects including:

• database development
• digitisation of collections
• purchase of equipment and conservation supplies
• professional support
• planning and resources to build capacity of small museums

Please let us know if:

• the need for the project has been clearly identified as a priority for the organisation
• appropriate advice on the project has been provided by sector professionals
• other funding is in place
• the project will assist in protecting collections of significance
• the project will improve community access and enhance visitor experiences
• the project will assist the organisation with achieving and maintaining professional standards.

Exhibitions and Interpretation

Funding will be considered for:

• construction and development of exhibitions
• interpretation of heritage sites and collections

Please let us know if:

• the need for the project has been clearly identified as a priority for the organisation
• appropriate advice on the project has been provided by sector professionals
• other funding is in place
• the project will improve community access and enhance visitor experiences.
• the project will assist the organisation with achieving and maintaining professional standards.

Recording and Publishing History

Funding will be considered for:

• oral histories, including equipment and resources
• historical publications, including research, writing and printing.

Please show us that:

• there is a detailed project plan and timeframe for the project
• researchers/writers can demonstrate previous experience in the sector
• a draft manuscript is available where funding is sought for publication costs
• appropriate advice on the project has been provided by sector professionals
• other funding is in place.
