We want to assist in the conservation and preservation of places of significance to Auckland, Northland and New Zealand’s heritage, to ensure places of significance are preserved for future generations.
Physical heritage projects are the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, archaeological sites, wāhi tapu and large items of historical significance.
Heritage Restoration
Funding will be considered for:

Conservation and restoration of heritage buildings as recommended in a conservation plan.

Fire protection of heritage buildings.
-
The conservation and restoration of items such as pipe organs, boats, locomotives and rolling stock.
All applications require a suitable conservation plan, or condition report, prepared by a conservation architect.
Please let us know if:
-
the building is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and/or the territorial local authority (a letter of support from the registering body must accompany the application)
-
the building or item has recognised local or regional significance
-
there is significant risk to the physical heritage of the building or item
-
other funding for the project is in place
-
the building has fire protection, or has fire protection planned as part of the restoration project.
The Trust does not fund where:
-
the building or item is residential, or in private or commercial ownership
-
there is no heritage benefit to the project (e.g. bathroom/kitchen maintenance not specified in a conservation plan)
-
there is limited public access
-
the building or item is a historic replica.
Protection and Restoration of Wāhi Tapu and Archaeological Sites
Funding will be considered for:
-
identification, recording and protection of wāhi tapu sites
-
protection of archaeological sites
Please let us know if:
-
other funding for the project is in place
-
the area has recognised local or regional significance
-
there is significant risk to the physical heritage of the site.
The Trust does not fund where:
-
there is no heritage benefit to the project (e.g. carparking, ablution facilities).
