At the last board meeting of 2010 our Trustees decided on $11million worth of grants for community building projects in the Auckland and Northland region.
Trustline newsletter, March 2011
A total of 22 projects were funded, ranging from $50,000 for renovating the Taipa Sailing Club and boat shed, to $2 million towards the planned expansion of the AUT Millennium Ownership Trust national sports training centre in Albany.
Grants Advisor Kimberly Rees said the projects were evenly spread across the region and across the budget range. Eight of the projects were awarded grants of up to $250,000; seven received grants of up to $600,000’ and seven were for $600,000 or more.
“We aim to support capital building projects where there is strong community involvement or where the project has regional significance,” says Kimberly. “The fund is for requests of $50,000 or more towards building projects.”
Assessments for the community building project grants began early in 2010 when interested groups provided expressions of interest (EOIs) outlining what they planned to do and how much the project would cost. That commenced a process that ended in December when Trustees made the final decisions.
Each year the EOIs must be lodged by March 1, along with a one-page project description and concept drawing.
If their EOI is approved, applicants are asked to provide more detailed documentation, which is the second stage of the submission process.. Applicants are expected to provide detailed project planning documentation, such as a feasibility study, a needs analysis identifying community need for the project, a project plan and project costs.”
Kimberly added: “We want to avoid being the sole funder, so we make sure to explain to the applicants that the Trust expects to be one of a group of funders that contribute towards a capital project.”
As details of the grant agreements are still being negotiated with some of the groups, the full list of community building project grants is not yet public. However, they will all be listed in our next annual report.
