PRESS RELEASE

Charitable funder ASB Community Trust has served up a grant of $120,000 to help develop a new tennis facility at Waipapa for the Kerikeri Tennis Club.

The courts will be next to the new Bay Sport stadium, which was itself a recent recipient of a $295,000 ASB Trusts grant. The $120,000 grant is the biggest the ASB Trusts board has given to the tennis club, although it has received $20,000 in trusts funding in the past.

The trust has also decided to grant $30,000 towards the Bay of Islands Arts Festival, in March 2006.

ASB Community Trust CEO Jennifer Gill said this support would help festival organisers keep ticket prices to a minimum and encourage a wide range of community participation.

“It will also give the organisers the opportunity to target their own funds for proposed interactive workshops with the performers and the younger members of the community,” she said.

Each year the Trust make grants of around $50m to community groups in Auckland and Northland. At the December monthly meeting trustees agreed to hand out a total of $1.2m for projects in education, the arts, sport, recreation, health and social services areas.

Founded on the sale of shares in the ASB bank, The Trust has given away more than $400m since being formed in 1988. Any incorporated or charitable trust can apply for funds, provided they are a not-for-profit organisation.
