In 2009 the Trust partnered with five other agencies to support a research project undertaken by AUT to investigate the key roles and functions of local government.
The aim of the report was to draw out and report on how and where social and economic development could fit in the new Auckland Council. The report draws on what works from an analysis of ten written case studies of local projects.
Part I of this report has two main sections. The first covers social dimensions of development and the second, economic dimensions of development.
The last section briefly draws them together as they depend on each other. A strong economy requires a healthy and well-educated population, where all Auckland‘s peoples can participate in generating wealth for the country, the city and themselves.

Part II documents ten case studies of good practice in local government’s engagement in social and economic wellbeing. Each case study tells its own story and can also be downloaded separately or together in Part II.
This report is a work in progress, as public debate will continue and much is still to be decided about Auckland’s future in the coming months. The authors hope that this report will spark conversations and they welcome feedback during this time.
